Muggia: the Little Venice of the Gulf of Trieste
The only Istro-Venetian village in Italy, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste: a corner of the Serenissima between sea, Karst hills and the nearby Slovenian border.
The Village
The last stretch of Italy before the Slovenian border, Muggia is a gem set by the sea that has preserved its deep Venetian heritage intact. Strolling through the narrow lanes (the “calli”) of the old town, you are welcomed by a magical atmosphere of pastel-coloured palaces and architecture that recalls the Serenissima.
The Old Town and the Harbour
The heart of town life is the elegant Piazza Marconi, with the Town Hall and the Cathedral of Saints John and Paul, with its white-stone Venetian-Gothic façade and magnificent rose window. Nearby lies the “Mandracchio”, the picturesque inner harbour embraced by colourful houses.
History and Traditions
The 14th-century Castle of Muggia overlooks the village; on the hills lies the Archaeological Park of Muggia Vecchia. In winter the squares come alive with the floats of the Carnival of Muggia, a tradition documented since 1420.
The Sea
The sea is part of the very identity of Muggia and the Gulf of Trieste. Here the seafaring tradition is intertwined with a great passion for sailing, favoured by the steady winds that make this stretch of the Adriatic one of the most appreciated in Europe. Throughout the year the gulf hosts national and international regattas, sailing events and gatherings that bring the sea and the seafront to life.
Sea events and experiences
Muggia’s bond with the Gulf of Trieste is felt all year round: from the great regattas to the new spaces overlooking the sea.
The Barcolana
One of the most eagerly awaited events is the Barcolana, the historic regatta that every October draws thousands of boats and tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world, turning the Gulf of Trieste into a unique spectacle. Alongside this event, numerous competitions organised by the sailing clubs of Muggia and Trieste take place, confirming the area as one of the leading sailing hubs of the Upper Adriatic.
The Acquario Seafront
The new Lungomare Acquario (Acquario seafront) is one of the symbols of the revival of Muggia’s coastline. Born from the redevelopment of a large coastal area, it now offers a beautiful panoramic promenade overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, ideal for walking, running or cycling immersed in the blue of the sea. Easily reached from the centre, it features sea accesses, green areas and spaces for sport and relaxation, with spectacular views over the gulf and the Istrian coast. At sunset it becomes one of Muggia’s most evocative spots, perfect for a romantic stroll.
